Haram Haqiqatjou #24: Calling Hamza Wald Maqbul a “Liberal Muslim”
- Background
In a recent Twitter post, Haqiqatjou’s Alasna Institute attacked Hamza Wald Maqbul, a Maliki scholar for his previous support of Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib’s stances on the Palestinian issue in Congress. Daniel Haqiqatjou attacks him for this and claims that his support of their Palestine advocacy entails his support of all their socio-political decisions. This is a logical fallacy and a red herring that Haqiqatjou employs to divert attention to a more charged subject, LGBT. Haqiqatjou is effectively asking the reader to stay focused on these politicians support of LGBT, all while discussing Maqbul’s support of said politicians’ Palestine advocacy.
- Haram Action
Haqiqatjou labels Hamza Wald Maqbul a “liberal Muslim”, a slanderous term that carries the connotation of revisionism, holding anti-orthodox views, and supporting “progressive” social causes. On the contrary, Maqbul has repeatedly maintained orthodox views. He also refers to him as a student of Yasir Qadhi, which is false information, intended to belittle, as they are peers.
- Evidence of Haram
Al-Mustawrid reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever eats so much as a morsel at the expense of a Muslim’s reputation, then Allah will feed him the likes of it in Hell. Whoever clothes himself with a garment at the expense of a Muslim’s reputation, then Allah will clothe him with the likes of it in Hell. Whoever stands in a position of repute and fame at the expense of a man, then Allah will make him stand in a position of repute and fame on the Day of Resurrection.”
